From twisting slot canyons to hanging gardens, from lofty peaks to mesas, Lake Powell provides access to some of the most amazing scenery and geological formations on the Colorado Plateau. Named in honour of Civil War veteran and one-armed explorer John Wesley Powell, who led the first successful scientific expedition down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, this lake provides unlimited hours of entertainment. Enjoy the turquoise waters aboard a highspeed motorboat touring the lake’s 3,219 kilometres (2,000 miles) of shoreline, or simply enjoy some quiet beach time in one of the many hidden away bays. For those who enjoy lake fishing, Lake Powell is an ideal location for catching small mouth, large mouth and striped bass.
private colorado river tour
Directly downstream of Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam, before the mighty Colorado River plunges on its 402 kilometre (250-mile) journey through the Grand Canyon National Park, a peaceful 24-kilometre (15-mile) stretch of river affords the chance to float between 305-metre (1,000 foot) high walls of Navajo Sandstone. Daily half-day excursions begin with private transportation from Amangiri to the base of the Glen Canyon Dam, followed by a privately-guided boat trip.
A leisurely stop on one of the river’s beautiful sandy beaches allows guests to enjoy a picnic lunch beneath the towering cliffs. Guests alight from the raft at historic Lees Ferry, which marks the beginning of the river’s course into Grand Canyon National Park, and will be transported back to the resort by vehicle.
Duration: 7.5 hours including driving time (5 hours on the river)
fly-fishing on the colorado river
The Colorado River below the Glen Canyon Dam offers 24 kilometres (15 miles) of gold medal Rainbow Trout fishing between 305-metre (1,000 foot) high red sandstone walls. An hour drive from Amangiri takes guests near Lees Ferry, where a professional guide and power boat are standing by for an “up-run” of the Colorado River. Countless gravel bars, eddies and side channels hide Rainbow Trout 40-56 centimetres (16-22 inches) in length.
A day of fly-fishing includes a picnic lunch, tackle, waders and flies, as well as an Arizona fishing license. Amangiri can also arrange for spin fishing tackle if guests prefer to fish with a friend or family member who is unfamiliar with fly casting.
