hiking and trails

on-property hiking

Amangiri’s trail system and unrivalled backcountry access allow guests to explore the region’s striking desert scenery on foot. With trail difficulties ranging from beginner to advanced, there is something for everyone. The hiking trails on the property are well marked and maintained and are easily accessible from the resort. Guest Assistants will happily provide guests with an Amangiri hiking map for self-guided outings. Amangiri offers daily complimentary one hour “taster” hikes for guests who wish to explore the property with an experienced guide.

hoodoo trail

Hoodoo is the most extensive trail on the property with three trailheads; the first, a short walk from the resort, on the right hand side of the road; the second, located behind the Amangiri Cabin; and the third, located further north along Kayenta Road. Guest Assistants can arrange a drop off or pick up from any of these trailheads.

The combined circuit hike approaches 5.6 kilometres (3.5 miles). The track passes by numerous free-standing sandstone towers, called hoodoos, as well as a narrow slick rock pass, ancient sand dunes, carved steps and other geological oddities. Amangiri guides can offer route suggestions to match fitness levels and interests.

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Duration: 2 hours for full loop

cave trail

Clearly visible from Amangiri’s Pavilion windows, Ulrike’s Cave is a popular hiking destination. The cave and a nearby false mine shaft were used as a set for the 1996 film Broken Arrow which starred John Travolta, Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis. More recently, the cave served as a workshop for German earth painter Ulrike Arnold, who created the paintings displayed in the Pavilion Dining Room as well as in each of Amangiri’s guest suites.

The trail begins at the Hoodoo Trailhead closest to the resort, and follows a separate path to the crest of a dune and on to the cave. This hike is between 1.6-3.2 kilometres (1-2 miles) in length, depending on the return route, for which there are three options: backtracking over the same trail, circumnavigating the “Cave Peak” or continuing on to the Hoodoo Trail which ends at the resort.

Skill Level: Beginner
Duration: 1 hour

coyote trail

The Coyote Trailhead is a short, ten-minute walk from the resort. It offers quick access to an area of Entrada Sandstone, also known as slickrock. Resembling petrified sand dunes, the 170-million-year-old rock strata offers quiet alcoves, cactus gardens and great sunset views towards Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. A metal staircase provides an easy route to the hiking area. Hikes are approximately 1.2 kilometres (3/4 mile) in length.

Skill Level: Beginner
Duration: 1 hour

studhorse trail

The trailhead for this hike is located off the main road across from the Amangiri Cabin. From the Cabin, the trail follows a rolling course to the south, towards the rear of Studhorse Mesa. Past the wire fence, guests depart Amangiri property and enter into Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Arizona Bureau of Land Management lands. Slickrock and solitude characterise this beginner to intermediate trail with a distance of approximately 1.6-3.2 kilometres (1-2 miles).

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Duration: 2 hours

studhorse via ferrata

A via ferrata, Italian for “iron road”, is a series of fixed cables and ladder rungs used by hikers to climb steep mountain routes. The Studhorse Via Ferrata is a combination scramble and technical climb using vertical steel rungs attached to the rock which follows a major crevasse through the Entrada and Dakota sandstone wall of Studhorse Mesa.

No previous climbing experience is required for this guidedonly ascent, but guests should be reasonably fit and experienced hikers. All guests will be on belay, wearing helmets and harnesses and be guided by an experienced guide. Once on top of Studhorse Mesa, guests can walk the short distance across to Skylight Arch and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Powell, Navajo Mountain, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and a breathtaking view of Amangiri. Round trip is approximately 2.4 kilometres (1.5 miles) with 152 metres (500 vertical feet) of ascent and descent.

via ferrata with studhorse mesa loop hike

From the top of the Studhorse Via Ferrata climbing system, guests may continue across Studhorse Mesa on an off-trail hike through the pristine landscape. The additional 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) explore isolated canyons located on the rear of Studhorse Mesa. Return is via the Studhorse Trail.

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Duration: 5 hours

hoodoo via ferrata

A second, more challenging via ferrata climbing route offers commanding views in every direction. This guided-only adventure will captivate and thrill hikers and climbers alike. There is an opportunity to rappel a section of the descent for those with a head for heights. Guests will begin the tour by hiking a portion of the Hoodoo Trail prior to their vertical ascent. Guests are strongly encouraged to experience the Studhorse Via Ferrata prior to climbing the Hoodoo Via Ferrata, given the increased level of difficulty.

Skill Level: Advanced
Duration: 2 to 3 hours

cave peak via ferrata

This newest Amangiri Via Ferrata is more challenging and exposed than the Studhorse and Hoodoo. It includes climbing steeper, more sustained sections of rungs, a spectacular, airy traverse and dramatic summit. Guests must ascend one of the other Via Ferratas to qualify for an ascent of Cave Peak. Like all Amangiri Via Ferratas, this peak is guided-only. With an unmatched vertical route of ascent, spectacular position and a summit clearly visible from the Amangiri Pavilion, the Cave Peak Via Ferrata is destined to become one of the all time great southwest adventures.

Skill Level: Advanced
Duration: 3 to 4 hours

off-property hiking

Amangiri also offers the southwest’s widest range of hiking opportunities, guided and unguided. In a region renowned for its needle-thin rock towers, slickrock domes and slot canyons, Guest Assistants can direct guests to a classic self-guided desert hike of any length and difficulty, or can arrange for a guide to accompany guests on an excursion providing all the necessary special equipment and training.

Amangiri guides can arrange full- and half-day hikes into areas rarely visited by the general public. These hikes are customised to interests, fitness and technical skill levels. The focus may be canyoneering (i.e. rappelling; easy rock scrambling), archeology, palaeontology, natural history, photography, water colour painting or simply relaxing with a picnic lunch prepared by Amangiri’s chefs.

private off-road slot canyon tour

Sculpted over millions of years by wind and water, slot canyons represent some of the region’s most unique sandstone formations. Sunlight filters down through the curved sandstone walls creating constantly changing patterns and shadows in many subtle shades of pinks, reds, purples, grays and yellows.

The inspiration for Amangiri’s architecture and design, the slot canyons are an intrinsic part of the Amangiri experience. Guests can enjoy private off-road adventure tours to Secret Canyon, one of the region’s most beautiful.

Skill Level: None required
Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours

horseback rides

To experience the pristine desert tundra on horseback, wandering through sweeping landscapes, towering sandstone peaks and along slot canyons, is an iconic American southwest adventure. Horseriding tours within Amangiri’s extensive trail system are available to suit all experience levels and abilities. A variety of two-hour trail routes offer multiple days of riding opportunities, with longer tours also available.

Skill Level: Beginner
Duration: 2 hours, with longer rides on request
