golf & shopping
Located on the slopes of Mount Merapi, close to the resort town of Kaliurang, the 18-hole Mount Merapi Golf Club is a scenic haven for golfers and sightseers alike. At 1,000 metres, it’s also a cool escape. Designed by Peter Thomson, the club is about an hour’s drive from Amanjiwo.
Yogayakarta, just an hour’s drive away, is Java’s cultural capital and a paradise for shoppers. Beautifully crafted wayang kulit shadow-puppet characters and stage props can be bought, as well as gamelan instruments, gold-threaded batik wedding sarongs and antiques such as Chinese beds, Javanese cabinets, and teakwood cabinets.
Borobudur is also blessed with arts and crafts. A two-storey craft centre and an adjacent gallery are but a ten minute car ride from Amanjiwo. Numerous other studios and boutiques are located in the area where one browse for antique glass paintings, contemporary silver jewellery, handmade batik sarongs, and stone sculptures.
The morning markets of Central Java are far removed from the tourist trail. In crowded alleyways under terracotta-tiled roofs, Javanese women sell everything from volcanic stone ornaments to deep-fried waterbuffalo skin and tiny fish in bamboo containers.
